What are Dental Veneers?

Since they are often crafted from porcelain, dental veneers are sometimes called “porcelain veneers.” After being crafted into about the width of your fingernail, these thin shells of porcelain are bonded securely to the front-facing surface of your teeth. The final result is a balanced, bright, and beautiful smile that’s free of common imperfections, like chips, stains, and gaps.

The Process of Getting Veneers

If Dr. Sutter determines at your initial consultation that you’re a good candidate for veneers, then the smile transformation process will officially begin! You’ll work together to create your custom treatment plan, which involves choosing the ideal size, shape, and shade of each veneer. Then, he will “prep” your teeth by removing a sliver of enamel, taking impressions for the dental lab, and adhering temporary veneers in place. Once we receive your final veneers, Dr. Sutter will replace your temporary ones with the real thing. That’s it – you’ll walk out of our office with the gorgeous smile you’ve been dreaming of!

The Benefits of Veneers

There are several reasons veneers continue to be so popular, including the fact that they:

  • Are stain-resistant
  • Can last for 10+ years
  • Are custom-made for each patient
  • Don’t come with any dietary restrictions
  • Can fix multiple dental imperfections
  • Can be placed in as little as two appointments

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to the cost, which is why we can’t give you a number here. That said, we can share some of the factors that play a role in the answer, like if any preliminary treatments are needed and the number of veneers needed to achieve the desired results. We will give you an estimate of the price at your consultation, of course. At that time, we will also review the financial solutions we welcome, like CareCredit, since dental insurance providers don’t typically help with cosmetic dental services.

Veneers FAQs

Does Getting Veneers Hurt?

Although the idea of having even a sliver of your tooth structure removed can sound scary or painful, especially compared to completely harmless whitening and bonding, we make sure you remain perfectly comfortable. Before we touch your teeth, we will explain the steps to you clearly and then give you a local anesthetic to numb the area and enable us to make small alterations to your teeth. Once that first appointment ends, the anesthetic will wear off, and you may feel a little bit of sensitivity, especially to extreme hot and cold, because the temporary veneers probably won’t fit exactly. However, this sensation should subside by the time your custom veneers are bonded on.

Why Does Any Enamel Need to Be Taken Away for Veneers?

Making a permanent change to your teeth like preparing for veneers can cause some hesitation initially. However, without this crucial step, your veneers would stand out unnaturally. In other words, something would obviously appear off with your smile, and your teeth would look fake.

The good news is that only about 0.5mm of enamel, the same width as most lead for mechanical pencils, needs to be shaved away to make space for your veneers. This little amount leaves most of the tooth’s structure intact and simply allows the veneer to sit evenly on your teeth, creating a more natural look.

Why Do I Need Temporary Veneers?

To fabricate truly customized veneers, we send your impressions to a professional dental lab, where technicians precisely craft the porcelain to match your impressions. Needless to say, this process takes time, but you need to carry on with life until they are ready. While you wait, your teeth would be extra vulnerable to decay because of the rougher than usual surface. This means you need to wear temporary veneers to protect your teeth from cavities.

In addition, without something on your teeth, they might look a little strange because they have been slightly reduced. Temporaries can complete your appearance for now, enabling you to go about your day without worrying about what your smile currently looks like. Within a couple of weeks, your personalized veneers should be finished and ready to put on.

Do Veneers Require Any Special Care?

Although exceptionally durable and stain resistant, veneers do need to be maintained—if you want them to last a long time. Without proper care, they can discolor, chip or break, fail, or lead to additional dental work. Also, keep in mind that while veneers will not get cavities, they are attached to teeth that will if you neglect them.

Fortunately, taking care of veneers resembles normal dental care, which means it’s simple and pretty convenient. You basically just need to make sure you continue daily brushing and flossing as usual and visit Dr. Sutter regularly for checkups and cleanings. For additional protection, you can be extra careful when eating hard foods like nuts, chips, and seeds and the like as well as cut back on staining foods and drinks like coffee, red wine, tomato sauce, dark sodas, and more. You can also wear a mouthguard while playing sports where a blow to the face might occur.
