5 Warning Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Veneers

Your porcelain veneers are beautiful, durable restorations that can address myriad dental issues in one convenient treatment. But they don’t last forever. Thankfully, with proper maintenance and use, they could improve your smile for decades, but eventually even the most meticulously cared for veneers will need to be replaced.

If you’re wondering how to know when it’s time for an update, keep reading. Here are five telltale signs that it’s time to upgrade your veneers!

1.     Your gums are receding

If you have gum disease or poor oral hygiene, your veneers can separate from the gum line, causing a gap between the veneer and the gums. If this occurs, you need to replace them as soon as possible, because if it is due to gum disease your veneers or your teeth could come loose or fall out.

2.     They’re chipped or cracked

If your veneers become chipped or cracked, it’s time to upgrade. While it is difficult to damage them, if you aren’t careful with what you eat, they can occasionally break, and older veneers may become worn down with time. Broken ones not only look bad, but they can also make it harder for you chew and speak properly!

3.     They feel uncomfortable to wear

If your veneers are the wrong size for your teeth or were not properly applied, they may become painful to wear or even affect your bite. If they start becoming uncomfortable, or you notice changes in how they fit, it’s time to see your dentist.

4.     The underlying tooth has decay

Your porcelain veneers need to fit tightly to the underlying tooth to prevent decay-causing bacteria from damaging them. Unfortunately, however, veneers can become loose, and the supporting teeth can become decayed your veneer may detach. In this type of situation, your dentist will need to remove the veneer, treat your tooth, and then install a replacement veneer.

5.     They’re dark or stained

While they do resist stains, it is still possible to discolor your veneers if you eat a diet of highly pigmented foods and beverages, or if you smoke. Sadly, professional whitening treatments do not work on them, so if they are not coming clean when you brush and floss, they’ll need to be replaced.

Remember, your porcelain veneers were designed to last for several decades, but not forever. Taking excellent care of your teeth and gums, using them properly, and visiting your dentist regularly can all help ensure they stay looking beautiful and healthy for as long as possible, but knowing the warning signs that its time to replace them can help protect your smile and keep it looking its best!
